Tank-farm operations
Reviewing the cost of tank-farm isolation
Isolation choices affect more than the initial equipment budget. Tasks such as draining a line, opening a flanged joint, handling a blind and restoring the connection require time, access and a defined work procedure. Their impact grows when changeovers are frequent.
When evaluating an alternative, map the full operating sequence. Consider the people involved, access equipment, fluid handling, downtime and the method used to verify isolation. Compare solutions against the same operating duty and acceptance requirements.
A mechanized isolation valve may reduce the need to open a joint during routine changeovers where the approved site procedure permits its use. It does not automatically replace a physical blind where positive separation is specifically required.
The Model Y brings mechanically forced sealing and a full-bore flow path into this evaluation. Project economics should be calculated from the actual installation and operating assumptions; savings from an illustrative case should not be treated as a guaranteed result.
